The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is warning spa owners
about an important safety recall. It specifically involves 26,000 Designer
Pro Series Suction Covers, which were manufactured by Waterway Plastics.
According to the CPSC, the drain suction cover can become disengaged from
the spa wall, posing an entrapment hazard. A drain entrapment occurs when
a person’s body becomes stuck against a pool or spa drain due to
the force of the suction or when clothing, jewelry, hair or a limb is
caught in a faulty drain.
Drain covers are one of the best defenses to entrapment. However, they
must function properly. In this case, Waterway Plastics has received 70
reports of drain covers detaching. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported to date.
This recall involves suction covers with model number 640-52XX S, printed
on top of the outside edge of the plastic. The round covers are black
and silver and were installed in select spas manufactured by Catalina
Spas, Four Winds Spas, Dimension One Spas, and Sunrise Spas from June
2011 to June 2013.
The CPSC warns that consumers should immediately stop using spas with the
recalled drained covers and contact Waterway Plastics for information
on receiving a free replacement cover.
