New Study Finds Aggressive Treatment of Traumatic Brain Injuries Is Most Effective

While aggressive treatment for severe traumatic brain injuries may cost more than traditional care, it leads to significantly better outcomes, improved quality of life, and lower long term care costs, according to a new study by researchers in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. The study, which appears online in the Journal of Neurosurgery, is the first study to demonstrate the cost-effectiveness of intensive TBI care.

“This study clearly shows that aggressive care, for both young and older patients who suffer a severe traumatic brain injury, provides patients the best chance at surviving and recovering, and also reduces lifetime costs associated of TBI treatment,” said Robert Whitmore, MD, Neurosurgery resident and the study’s lead author.

Despite effective guidelines from the Brain Trauma Foundation, controversy remains regarding the invasive nature and expensive costs associated with aggressive treatment. As a result, expensive interventions like intracranial monitoring and decompressive craniotomies are not routinely performed.

As San Diego injury attorneys, we hope that more insurance companies will agree to cover more aggressive treatments for patients with TBIs. Unfortunately, insurance companies and other parties that may be responsible for the payment of medical expenses do not always fulfill their responsibilities. As we previously noted on this blog, insurance carriers in California and across the country often deny access to acute rehabilitation for traumatic brain injury patients.
