Fans to Celebrate the Super Bowl Responsibly

Super Bowl XLVIII is February 2, 2014. While celebrating with good food and cold beer has become a national pastime, we urge our readers to celebrate responsibly.

As San Diego personal injury attorneys, we know that Super Bowl Sunday is one of the most dangerous nights to be on the road. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 40 percent of fatal crashes on Super Bowl Sunday in 2010 were connected to alcohol impairment. In fact, drunk driving contributed to a fatal accident every 52 minutes.

If you’re attending a Super Bowl party or watching the game at a local establishment, we encourage you to follow the NHTSA’s safety tips:

  • Designate your sober driver before the party begins.
  • Avoid drinking too much alcohol too fast. Pace yourself. Eat plenty of food, take breaks, and alternate with non-alcoholic drinks.
  • Monitor how much alcohol you have consumed.
  • Make sure your designated driver avoids alcohol and is sober before getting in the vehicle.
  • If you don’t have a designated driver, ask a sober friend for a ride home; call a cab, friend, or family member to pick you up; or if possible stay where you are for the night.
  • Never let a friend get behind the wheel intoxicated. Take the keys away and help arrange a safe way for them to get home.
  • Always wear your seat belt. It’s still your best defense against other drunk drivers.
