There's an App for That!

As we mentioned last week, consumers often find out about product defects after injuries occur. Technology is one of the best ways to keep consumers informed about important product safety information.

In an effort to maximize its online presence, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is holding a contest for developers to create applications (apps) and other tools that raise awareness of consumer product safety information and recalls.

The CPSC will be accepting submissions in the following categories:

  • Best Mashup with Online Auction Sites: This category will combine CPSC data with information available on online auction sites.
  • Best Mashup with Online Product Reviews: This category will combine CPSC data with any product review information available on the Internet.
  • Best Mashup with Search Tools: This category will combine CPSC data with search results from search engines, searchable classified ads, or any other search tools.
  • Most Innovative: This category will use CPSC data to educate consumers creatively about product safety information.

While it will likely take some time for these apps to become a reality, there are steps you can take now to stay informed. In addition to regularly checking out our San Diego Injury Blog for product recalls, you can also register with the CPSC to receive email notifications of product recalls in a variety of categories, such as children’s products or household goods. The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration and U.S. Food and Drug Administration also offer similar services.
