It's Time to Think About Water Safety

As San Diego injury lawyers, we want to remind our readers that May is National Water Safety Month. The public awareness campaign comes as the weather gets warmer, and many San Diego families will spend more time at the beach, lake or pool.

Last year, at least 174 children between the ages of 1 and 14 drowned in swimming pools or spas from Memorial Day through Labor Day, according to media reports compiled by the USA Swimming Foundation. More than 100 of the drowning victims were children younger than age 5. Unfortunately, California suffered the highest number of pool and spa drownings involving children younger than 15, with 21 deaths.

“Understanding the risks associated with being in and around the water and the steps parents and children should take—from learning to swim to learning CPR to knowing the five steps of water competency—is crucial. National Water Safety Month helps communicate this important message,” said Aquatic Product Manager Nichole Steffens, American Red Cross.

To help children stay safe as summer approaches, we would like to share the following water safety tips:

  • Never leave a child unattended in a pool or spa and always watch your children closely around all bodies of water.
  • When not in use, keep toys away from the pool and out of sight.
  • Install barriers and/or alarms around pools and spas.
  • Designate a “Water Watcher” to supervise children in the pool or spa. This person should not be reading, texting, using a smart phone or be otherwise distracted.
  • Learn how to swim, and teach your child how to swim.
  • Learn how to perform CPR on children and adults.
  • Keep children away from pool drains, pipes and other openings to avoid entrapments.
  • Check that any pool and spa you use has drain covers that comply with federal safety standards, and if you do not know, ask your pool service provider about safe drain covers.
