Did You Know April Is Distracted Awareness Month?

As San Diego car accident attorneys, we want our readers to know that April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. To increase awareness, the Department of Transportation is warning drivers—“One Text or Call Could Wreck it All.”

The National Safety Council estimates that cell phone use is responsible for 1.6 million crashes a year. In 2014, approximately 3,179 people were killed in distracted driving crashes, accounting for 10 percent of all crash fatalities.

Unfortunately, despite having some of the strongest distracted driving laws in the country, cell phone use behind the wheel is actually on the rise in California. A study by the California Office of Traffic Safety recently revealed that 10 percent of all drivers in California use their cell phones while driving. The findings represent a 39-percent increase from 2014. In a separate study, a staggering 53 percent of drivers admitted to making a driving mistake while talking on a cell phone.

Until drivers appreciate the risks of distracted driving, crashes are likely to continue. To reinforce the dangers of talking or texting on a cell phone while behind the wheel, we would like to share the following statistics:

  • At any given daylight moment across America, approximately 660,000 drivers are using cell phones or manipulating electronic devices while driving.
  • Talking on a cell phone or texting is the number one source of driver distractions.
  • Texting takes your eyes off the road for an average of five seconds, far enough to travel the length of a football field at 55 mph. Most crashes happen with less than 2 seconds reaction time.
  • The act of talking on a cell phone, even hands free, can lead to “inattention blindness,” where your brain isn’t seeing what’s right in front of you.
