New Report Highlights Injury Risks Associated with High Chairs

As San Diego injury lawyers, we are alarmed by a new study of high-chair-related injuries. It found that every hour one child in the United States is treated in the emergency room for head injuries, bruises, cut, and other injuries associated with these baby products.

As Reuters reports, the study found that 9,400 young children in the U.S suffer fall injuries from high chairs every year. Moreover, the number of incidents is rapidly increasing. Over the study period, the researchers found that the number of high chair injuries per year rose more than 20 percent, from 8,926 injuries in 2003 to 10,930 in 2010.

“Maybe even more concerning, the rate of head injuries has increased by almost 90 percent between 2003 and 2010, and I think it begs the question, what’s going on?” said study researcher Dr. Gary Smith, director of the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio

The researchers attribute the rise in high chair injuries to a number of factors, one of which is product safety recalls. The study revealed that more than 3.4 million high chairs had been recalled due to faulty designs since 2008.

“We know that over the recent years, millions of chairs have been recalled in the U.S. because of not meeting safety standards. But usually, a very low percentage of recalled products are actually returned,” Smith stated.

Given the risks, parents are strongly encouraged the register their high chairs and monitor the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission website for recall notices.
