National Child Passenger Safety Week Highlights Importance of Safety Restraints

As San Diego personal injury attorneys, we want to raise awareness of National Child Passenger Safety Week. The goal is to make sure parents and caregivers are correctly securing all children in the right car restraints for their ages and sizes.

By now, everyone knows that seatbelts save lives. However, properly securing your child can still be a challenge. Tragically, car accidents are a leading cause of death for children 1 to 13 years old. In 2012, over one third of children killed in car crashes were not in car seats, booster seats, or seat belts.

“We see incident after incident when a child is not properly secured in a restraint system that the results are tragic,” stated Chief Avery Browne of the California Highway Patrol. “CHP wants to do everything we can to have every child car seat installation inspected and every parent, grandparent, other family members, and caretakers educated on how to install the seat and properly secure each and every child. This focus is extremely important and we all need to do our part to keep our children as safe as possible.”

Below is a brief summary of California’s child restraint laws:

  • Children under the age of 8 must be secured in a car seat or booster seat in the back seat.
  • Children under the age of 8 who are 4-foot-9 or taller may be secured by a safety belt in the back seat.
  • Children who are 8 years and over shall be properly secured in an appropriate child passenger restraint system or safety belt.
  • Passengers who are 16 years of age and over are subject to California’s mandatory seat belt law.
