"Click It or Ticket" Campaign Highlights Importance of Seatbelts

In the next few weeks, police officers will be on the lookout for San Diego drivers and passengers who fail to wear their seatbelts. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) “Click It or Ticket” campaign runs from May 23 to June 5, 2016.

While no one likes to get a ticket, the seatbelt enforcement is intended to increase compliance and safety. Seatbelt use has reached all-time highs in recent years, but there are still many people who don’t buckle up.

“We have made enormous progress as a nation in increasing seat belt use, but far too many people are still dying because they are not buckled up during crashes,” said NHTSA Administrator Mark Rosekind. “Before you even turn the key, make sure that everyone in your car has their seat belt on, every trip, day and night.”

Below are a few key statistics regarding seatbelt use:

  • Almost half of passenger vehicle occupants who were killed in 2014 were unrestrained.
  • An estimated 57 percent of passenger vehicle occupants killed at night were not wearing their seatbelts, compared to 41 percent killed during daytime.
  • In 2014, men wore their seatbelts at a lower rate than women did – 53 percent of men in fatal crashes were unbelted, compared to 40 percent of women.

The statistics also confirm that seatbelts are one of the most effective tools for preventing serious injury in the event of a San Diego car accident. The NHTSA has estimated that lap/shoulder seatbelts, when used, reduce the risk of fatal injury to front-seat passenger car occupants by 45 percent and the risk of moderate-to-critical injury by 50 percent.

Of course, it is also important that children are restrained properly in car seats and booster seats. An estimated 252 lives of children under 5 were saved by child restraints in 2014.
