Back to School Safety: Preventing San Diego Playground Injuries

While many California parents would expect school to be a safe and secure environment for their children, as San Diego injury attorneys, we know that is often not the case. In fact, an estimated 25 percent of the more than 14 million unintentional injuries to children each year happen in and around schools.

Many of these injuries occur on the playground. Emergency departments treat more than 200,000 children ages 14 and younger for playground-related injuries, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Below are a few more alarming statistics about playground injuries:

  • About 45 percent of playground-related injuries are severe–fractures, internal injuries, concussions, dislocations, and amputation.
  • Falls are the greatest source of injury, with nearly 70 percent involving falls to the surface, and 10 percent involving falls onto equipment.
  • Nearly 40 percent of playground-related injuries occur during the months of May, June, and September.
  • Children ages 5 to 9 have higher rates of emergency department visits for playground injuries than any other age group, with the majority of injuries occurring at school.
  • Lack of supervision is a contributing factor in 40 percent of playground injuries.
  • A study in New York City found that playgrounds in low-income areas had more maintenance-related hazards than playgrounds in high-income areas.

With this in mind, we encourage parents to inspect the playground at your child’s school to verify that it is safe. It is also important to talk to school officials regarding whether the playground is adequately staffed during recess and other times where children may play outside.

If your child or someone you care about has suffered serious harm due to someone else’s negligence, you may be entitled to compensation. For more information, please contact a San Diego personal injury attorney at the Law Offices of Robert Vaage for a free consultation.
