Honda Recalling 650K Defective Odyssey Minivans

Many San Diego families rely on minivans to transport children to and from school, sports, and other activities. That’s why it is particularly concerning that Honda is recalling nearly 650,000 Odyssey minivans.

According to a notice filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the minivan recall includes certain model year 2011-2016 Odyssey vehicles manufactured August 17, 2010, to October 1, 2015.

The defective minivans have second row seats that have a release lever that allows the seats to move for easier access to the third row of seats. However, this release lever may remain in the unlocked position allowing the seats to move unexpectedly. As acknowledged by Honda, the defect "increases the risk of injury to the seat occupant during a crash."

As USA Today reports, Honda maintains that it is not aware of any injuries associated with the auto safety recall. However, consumers have filed several complaints with NHTSA regarding the defect.

In one complaint, the owner of a 2011 Odyssey reported that the seat that held their children came detached during a crash. “Our son was thrown into the back of the driver’s seat and suffered injuries to his face and body,” the owner stated. In another complaint, pressing the brakes while traveling at 35 mph caused the rear passenger seat to flip forward while it was occupied by a child. The owner of a 2014 Odyssey wrote: “My children several times have had the seat move and almost choke them when we came to a complete stop.”

Honda will notify owners, and dealers will install an additional bracket and spring to both second row outboard seats, free of charge. The recall began on January 23, 2017.
