IKEA Recalling Safety Gates Due to Fall Risk

Parents frequently rely on safety gates to keep babies and toddlers away from hazards, such as stairs. Accordingly, they need to function properly to keep children safe.

Earlier this month, IKEA announced the recall of 80,000 safety gates. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the defective gates can unintentionally become unlocked, which poses a risk of falls and related injuries. IKEA previously recalled one of the models in May in response to reports of the gate coming unmounted from the wall.

The latest recall involves IKEA PATRULL, PATRULL FAST, and PATRULL KLÄMMA safety gates and safety gate extensions. The defective PATRULL KLAMMA safety gate, which was recalled in May, resulted in three children falling down stairs. In total, IKEA has received 55 reports of incidents worldwide, including 10 injuries that resulted in two concussions, and cuts and bruising.

The recalled safety gates and gate extensions were sold at IKEA retail stores across the country and online at from August 1995 through June 2016 for between $10 and $60. As described in the recall notice, they are white, made of beech wood, or steel and plastic. The pressure-mounted gates open both inward and outward. They measure about 28 ¾ inches high with an adjustable width from about 28 ¾ inches to 34 ¼ inches. The gate extensions measure about 28 ¾ inches high with an adjustable width from about 2 ½ inches to 5 inches.

A permanent label is attached to the metal bar at the bottom of the safety gate containing “IKEA” and the article number. Consumers can find the specific article numbers included in the recall on the CPSC website.

Given the serious risks associated with the defective safety gates, the CPSC advises that parents and caregivers immediately stop using the safety gates and safety gate extensions. Consumers can return them to any IKEA store for a full refund.
